After
being pleased with the results of "Black Eyed Pea", the track that
was recorded for Is That Jazz?, it was evident that Galactic and
producer Dan Prothero should work on recording a full-length album.
The result was "Coolin' Off". Just before the recording of the album,
the band invited Theryl to collaborate on a couple of songs. He
agreed and all were pleased with the results...so much so that Theryl
has not missed a Galactic gig since then.
"For
Coolin' Off we had like 10 or 11 tunes worked out ready to record,"
explains Stanton. "That was are plan to put those on the album.
Then Dan was like, "Why don't you guys just jam and I'll record
it." So it wound up about half the record turned out that way. Dan
really dug the spontaneity of it. Only half the song we had ready
beforehand showed up on the record."
After
Prothero failed to find a home for the release at any major labels,
he started his own Fog City Records and released Coolin' Off as
the debut for the independent label.
The
title of the album is self-evident for anyone who happened to be
in New Orleans the couple of days this album was recorded. It was
100 degrees and 90 percent humidity. Robert took a picture of an
old fan his father which for the album cover which suits the title
quite appropriately.
